Filmversion av Charles Dickens roman. Dirk Bogarde spelar Sydney Carton, en alkoholiserad och djupt olycklig advokat som förälskar sig i Lucie Manette. Men hon gifter sig istället med Charles Darnay. När en vän till Charles fängslas efter den franska revolutionen åker Charles dit för att rädda honom, men hamnar själv inför domstol. Sydney kommer på en plan för att rädda maken till kvinnan han älskar.
